Mama Wants: Baby’s First-Words Stories DVD

67439As much as I tried to avoid turning on the television for my son, there were times when I needed to eat without holding a baby.  I don’t think my husband and I ate a meal together until he was 6 months old and discovered that he would attentively watch a baby DVD.  Until then, we switched off.  Now, I am guilty of turning the TV on or popping in a DVD for a few minutes to answer emails or wash dishes.

Instead of feeling guilty, I should try and find the most educational DVDs possible.  At least I can make sure what he watches is helping more than harming.  So Smart has a new line of DVDs for babies 1 year and older called “Baby’s First Word Stories”  These contain characters who have simple and easy to follow adventures about bath time and playing.  The scenes are set up to repeat one word, like “bath,” to help baby with learning those new vocabulary words.  While this can be annoying as an adult, the baby will love to watch the simple and short scenes.  Afterwards, there is a quiz on the new words seen.  The DVD also has activity sheets to help you, the parent, use the DVD as a teaching tool.  There are suggestions for ways to incorporate the vocabulary into games that can reinforce learning.  Plus other fun ways to interact with your baby.

I know that as a new parent, sometimes I need ideas on how to help reinforce new ideas with my child, and how to help teach them.  Parenting is intuitive, but advice is appreciated!

My son, who is just shy of 1, has enjoyed watching the DVD we were sent to review.  The music is entertaining without being annoying.  The sounds are smooth, which both of us can enjoy.  The stories were short enough to keep his attention as well.  I expect we will continue to watch and enjoy the DVD as he gets older, and begins really practicing his vocabulary.
